Mission of The Black Poster Project

The Black Poster Project exists to honor lives lost to substance use disorder and to transform grief into awareness, prevention, and hope. Through hundreds of individual memorial posters, each featuring a beloved person’s face and story, the project creates a powerful visual reminder that addiction affects real families, real communities, and real lives — not statistics.

Our mission is to:

  • Humanize the epidemic by showing the faces and stories behind the numbers, reminding the world that every life matters.

  • Educate and raise awareness about substance use disorder, recovery, and prevention through public displays, community events, and a special focus on students and school outreach.

  • Support families by giving them a voice and a way to honor their loved ones with dignity and compassion.

  • Reduce stigma surrounding substance use of any kind and mental health by fostering empathy, understanding, and open conversation.

  • Inspire action — encouraging communities, leaders, and individuals to engage in prevention, advocacy, and support efforts.

Each poster is a testament to love, loss, and resilience. Together, they form a collective call to end stigma, promote healing, and build a future where no family feels alone in their grief or struggle.
